Millersville University bans hoverboards
Colleges and universities in Greater Cincinnati are still weighing the available research regarding self-balancing, motorized scooters, or “hoverboards”, and rolling out campus-wide bans is still possible in the future. “Given the housing density and the large number of students in our residence halls, our main concern was safety”.
On Monday, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission said it was investigating 28 fires tied to hoverboards in 19 states, according to the The Associated Press. “The batteries … will cause a fire”, Williamson said.
“I am also concerned that there is no safety standard in place for hoverboards”.
Universities across IN are taking action to ban hoverboards over worries that batteries can catch fire. Almost all of UI’s peer institutions in the Big Ten, he said, are in the process of enacting similar bans. “Because of safety concerns a lot of residential programs, at least temporarily, have banned them until the final safety outcome”.
“We are moving towards discouraging their use until the safety catches up with the technology”, college spokesman John Zeswitz said.
“We will continue to monitor the hoverboard phenomenon and react accordingly, if it becomes necessary to regulate their use on campus”, Pritchard said.
Louisiana State University sent a message to on-campus residents December 30 banning the devices.
Students who already have a hoverboard on campus are not completely out of luck. “We want students to enjoy themselves and have fun here, but we would certainly meet and discuss any problems that arise”.
The ban includes the use, possession and storage of hoverboards in residence halls, Greek houses, university apartments and all academic buildings, according to a news release from UK.
Students attending ASU and U of A will receive email notices of official policy changes sometime this semester.
COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) – The University of Missouri is temporarily banning hoverboards.
The move has frustrated some students, especially those who got a hoverboard over the holidays.
“If people would take care of their hoverboards more, not leaving them to charge all night like with cellphones, then they wouldn’t overheat”, Smith said.
