President Obama vetoes ACA repeal
On Wednesday, the House voted 240-181, nearly entirely along party lines, to pass the legislation that essentially repeals the ACA.
Obama also objected to provisions in the repeal legislation to defund Planned Parenthood, a women’s health organization that also provides abortions. “So, next year, if we’re sending this bill to a Republican president, it will get signed into law”, Ryan continued.
With little public fanfare, President Barack Obama on Friday vetoed a Republican-crafted measure created to repeal his signature health care overhaul.
The President chided the Republican-led legislature in a lengthy statement issued with the veto, saying that instead of wasting their energy on repealing the law, Congress should focus more on the nation’s economy.
President Obama vetoed legislation today that would have repealed most of Obamacare. It was the 62nd time that Congress had voted on repealing or gutting the law colloquially known as Obamacare since it became law in 2010. The bill previously passed the Senate under special rules protecting it from Democratic obstruction.
The bill was meant to send a message to voters that if they elect a Republican to the White House in November, the contentious health care bill could be undone. The House passed a bill Thursday that would ban new subsidies to help people buy health insurance until the Obama administration enacts a new verification system to ensure they only go to those who are eligible.
The bill would also cut federal funding for Planned Parenthood. In the meantime, following President Obama’s veto, Republican leaders are aiming to schedule a symbolic override vote to coincide with the annual “March for Life” rally in Washington, D.C. set for January 22. Obamacare will be gone.
The White House said earlier this year that more than 17 million US citizens have attained health coverage under the law in the last two years. They’ve had an equally hard time defunding Planned Parenthood, despite the release of controversial videos that showcased Planned Parenthood’s involvement in the sale of body parts of aborted babies.
“The president has shown he is willing to pull more money out of the pockets of hard-working Americans, limit access to care, tax innovation, burden job creators and undermine the doctor-patient relationship in order to protect his legacy”.
“This bill also significantly defunds Planned Parenthood”. A ban on federally funded abortions has been in place for decades.
