Jordan Spieth shoots sizzling 64 to go four clear
World number one Jordan Spieth is showing no sign of rust, closing with an eagle Saturday to extend his lead to five shots at the US PGA Tour Tournament of Champions.
Spieth bounced back from the bogey by converting a 46-foot birdie putt at the 12th before he went on to make two more birdies at the 14th and 15th.
Koepka capitulated himself up the leaderboard and into outright second courtesy of a 10-under-par 63 – the lowest round of the week and the best of his career.
Spieth peppered his card with seven birdies and an eagle, with just one bogey, to top the pile at 24 under and is on course to start the 2016 season with a seventh PGA Tour win.
“I think it’s a great goal to set, to try and set something to shoot for versus trying to look at behind you at who is coming up”, he said.
Defending champion Patrick Reed slipped from second to third and remains on 18-under, while Brandt Snedeker and Fabian Gomez are in a tie for fourth on 15-under. “Today I was making putts”.
Spieth shot a 9-under 64 on Friday capped by this late birdie that barely fell on the 18th hole.
Brooks Koepka is Spieth’s nearest challenger at the top after he produced the round of the day to move onto 19-under-par for the tournament.
Kevin Kisner began the day in joint-second but could not keep pace and fell into a tie for sixth after a two-under-par 71. Then, he hit a speed bump, his first bogey of the week, at the par-3 eighth.
That gave Spieth a superb 65 after 54 holes at the Kapalua Resort, despite not being at his pinpoint best with his iron play for much of a blustery day on the Hawaiian island of Maui. By the ninth hole, however, he had turned it on and made five birdies over his last 10 holes Thursday night.
South Africa’s Stone was also 10 under, picking up four birdies in his opening nine, and five birdies in the 11 holes he managed to play on Saturday at Glendower Golf Club.
They have a two-shot lead over Keith Horne, who completed only nine holes of his third round.
