Facebook’s Oculus Rift Costs $599
Even an infusion of billions of dollars from Facebook didn’t speed up development.
Despite this, the first roll out of the Oculus Rift turned out to be very successful as it has already been sold out.
Well, that changes now.
Oculus VR, the company behind the new virtual reality gaming headset Oculus Rift, has officially started taking preorders, promising to give users a glimpse into the future.
The Facebook-owned company has opened pre-orders for the headset, which will cost £499. According to Slate, those who are determined to play quality VR games should expect to spend close to $2,000 for the VR-ready PC and the Oculus Rift.
You can pre-order your Oculus Rift for $599 at shop.oculus.com and we’ll be shipping at the end of March to 20 countries initially.
“International Rift prices are not artificially bloated – we have to cover the required taxes, sales tax in U.S. works differently”, tweeted Luckey.
But many were annoyed by the price of the headset. In April, the headset will become available at select retailers.
Oculus says it will be certifying recommended PC rigs with an “Oculus ready” sticker, and that once the Rift is out customers will be able to buy new PCs that come with a headset included. However, its Oculus Touch controller has been delayed to later in the year. But the whole package will include the Rift headset, an Oculus Remote, Xbox One controller, two virtual reality games and all the necessary cables.
In a statement, Oculus VR said, “People have been dreaming about immersive high-end VR for decades, and we’re thrilled to share Rift with you this March”.
Luckey couldn’t reveal what went into the $599 cost of production, but assured the community with “whatever credibility” he has left that individuals pre-ordering the Rift are “getting a pretty insane deal”.
