Epic Bengals Meltdown Kills Comeback and Hands Game to Steelers
He received a 15-yard penalty and was lucky not to be ejected.
However, the Bengals battled back after Burfict put Roethlisberger out of commission with a thundering sack. The Steelers replaced him with backup LANDRY JONES who proceeded to pass the time by handing off the ball to Steeler running backs.
After the video was online for about a half hour, Jones deleted the post. Things weren’t pretty for the Steelers, and it seemed like there was nearly no chance of a victory, but they had some luck on their side and some bad decision making by the Bengals.
This season, in a Week 12 game against the St. Louis Rams, Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus gave Kirkpatrick his best grade of the season thanks to his allowing just 34 yards on six catches.
Seemingly having the win, the call altered the outcome of the game and many Bengals players and fans were visibly distraught by the playoff loss. It began with Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak flagged for a 15-yard penalty after grabbing Bengals safety Reggie Nelson in the first quarter, and it spilled into numerous skirmishes and fights among the players on the field throughout the contest. Unable to pass with any real authority, he still managed to get the Steelers near midfield with 22 seconds to go before the two personal fouls.
Kevin Huber pinned the Steelers inside their 10-yard line, although Pittsburgh came out punching.
But then Jeremy Hill saw the ball pop out as Cincinnati tried to run out the clock and the Steelers recovered at the Pittsburgh 9 with 1:23 left. “It’s tough not being able to help this team”, Dalton said.
Kansas City’s 30-0 victory at Houston broke a streak of eight straight playoff losses by the Chiefs and was their first postseason win since beating the Oilers in Houston on January 16, 1994.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cincinnati Bengals played nice this time. Linebacker Vontaze Burfict came across with a hit to the head on Brown for the first penalty, then cornerback Adam Jones was caught throwing a punch (but missing) while apparently trying to address why Steelers linebackers coach Joey Porter was on the field in the moments after the play as officials were sorting things out. Keep in mind that Cincy was already deep in Steelers territory and could have just kneeled down three times to make Pittsburgh use all its timeouts, while giving themselves a field goal opportunity. He threw an incomplete pass to Antonio Brown, but Burfict delivered a drive-by forearm shiver to Brown’s melon, appearing to knock him out cold. They finally scored the first points of the night and took a 3-0 lead, with just over two minutes remaining until halftime. He missed four games earlier this season with a left knee injury. No other National Football League team has lost more than three consecutive opening-round games.
Pittsburgh wound up getting its third field goal on that drive to go up, 9-0.
When asked about his shoulder, the quarterback said: “We got a win, that’s all that matters”.
“I’m good now”, he said. “They (saw) the dam breaking and their emotions got to them”.
“That’s probably the funnest, scariest game I’ve been in”, said Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier, who forced a key fumble late in the fourth quarter and who blasted Bengals running back Giovani Bernard on a hit that left the rusher with a concussion.
