All the Records Star Wars: The Force Awakens Has (And Hasn’t) Broken
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is shattering records left and right at lightening speed. It took Avatar 336 days to reach that record, and Star Wars has just taken over the box office for the first three weekends and change of its release.
According to to a release from Disney, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars” earned enough at the box office on Wednesday to pass “Avatar’s” $760.5 million lifetime gross.
It’s not just how well the latest episode does domestically, but the overseas market can contribute up to two thirds for a big studio film’s revenues, BoxOffice Media’s managing editor, Daniel Loría, explains. Twenty films have earned more that The Force Awakens when inflation is taken into account, including 101 Dalmatians and The Sound of Music. J Abram’s Star Wars will become the highest grossing film of all time.
British cinemas experienced a record-breaking 12 months in 2015, bringing in a staggering £1.3 billion in ticket sales, smashing the previous high of £1.1 billion set in 2012. Last March, Disney granted Lu Han honorary Jedi status in the promotion of the film, so perhaps we should add him to the list of Asian heroes elevated by The Force Awakens? As for the Cameron hits, “Titanic” is fifth with $1.16 billion, and “Avatar” sits at 14th at $837 million.
“We are proud of these records, but know that they would not be possible without fans’ enthusiasm and continued support”, Disney said in a statement. Industry eyes will now be on China, where The Force Awakens opens this weekend.
Internationally, the Daisy Ridley starrer has garnered $799.1 million for a global total of $1.56 billion.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, box office analysts expect The Force Awakens to max out at around $2.2 billion-$2.4 billion globally.
