New York City police officer shot responding to large fight
NYPD Officer Sherrod Stuart, 25, was shot in the right foot after he and a partner responded to numerous 911 calls about a fight in the street with guns, knives and bats outside 2505 Third Ave., Police Commissioner William J. Bratton said at a press conference.
A cop responding to a South Bronx street fight early Saturday morning was injured during a shootout as officers pursued one of the suspects, authorities said.
The suspect shot the officer in the ankle, after which the officer returned fire four times, seriously wounding him.
A 19-year-old suspect, Christopher Rice, was in serious condition at the same hospital, the commissioner said. He said Rice was released from court on the fare-beating charge at 11 p.m. Friday night, three hours before the fight was reported.
Officials said Stuart’s injuries are not life-threatening.

Five stabbing victims have also been taken to local hospitals in connection to that incident. The fight was described as an unlicensed party with 100 to 200 people in attendance.
He is being treated at Lincoln Hospital and is listed in stable condition; he is expected to recover. Stuart is part of an anti-crime unit at the nearby 40th Precinct.
Four guns were recovered at the scene, including a.380-caliber semiautomatic that police said had been used by Rice. Stuart’s father is a detective with the NYPD.
A resident told the Daily News that a party had gotten out of control, “There was arguing and then there was screaming”.
