Mumbai girl drowns at Bandra Bandstand while taking selfies with friends
She’s thought to have now been taken away within the high-tide.
An apparent “selfie obsession” involving youths led to tragic incidents in Mumbai and Jammu on Saturday. As per reports, all the three girls are residents of Govandi. On viewing the event, a childhood who stood nearby also leaped into the ocean.
Reportedly, the incident occurred when the girl had gone to take a stroll along with her friends.
After the girl fell, a local youth jumped in to save her. However, there is no trace of the missing persons.
Two police patrol boats, fire brigade and Coast Guard are coordinating efforts to locate and rescue the two missing people. “They did not notice the rising water level and remained on the rock taking pictures”.
The fire brigade was immediately pressed into service and later ICG, too, launched a search operation but the two could not be traced.
Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said, “One youngster Ramesh Walunj tried to save her but unfortunately both of them fell into the sea”. “One woman called Tarannum and the stone abruptly slipped apart”.
An Indian Coast Guard helicopter started sorties near Bandra Bandstand, opposite the Hotel Taj Lands End in the evening even as the high tide hampered both visibility and rescue operations. “We have, time and again, warned citizens to not venture deep inside the waters, but whenever the police try to intervene, they are accused of moral policing”, said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.
