‘The Revenant’ dominates Golden Globe Awards
In a closely-contested men’s field, Leonardo DiCaprio won for his lead role as a fur trapper seeking retribution in The Revenant while Matt Damon’s astronaut stranded on Mars in The Martian won the comedy acting award.
Other nominees in the Globes’ top two categories this year are the dramas “Carol” and “Room”, and “Joy”, “Spy” and “Trainwreck” in the comedy category. Matt Damon won best actor in a comedy for his performance in Ridley Scott’s nerdy sci-fi hit “The Martian”.
Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and actor Leonardo DiCaprio at the 73rd Annual Golden Globe awards. Winning her fourth Globe in 11 nominations, Winslet triumphed over the lauded Alicia Vikander for “Ex Machina”, though Vikander is also contending for best actress in “The Danish Girl”.
Twentieth Century Fox’s strategy of putting “The Martian” into competition as a comedy paid off with a best-picture win in that category. “I want to dedicate this award to music”, Bernal said, “to all the people who find there in the music a common ground for communication, for justice (and) for happiness”. This was the third time that DiCaprio was bestowed with a Golden Globe.
Hollywood’s bad boy host is returning to hosting the awards show.
DiCaprio, who got a standing ovation from his Hollywood peers, said he wanted to share the award with all the indigenous communities around the world.
In another mild surprise, Rachel Bloom won best actress in a TV comedy for “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”, which premiered on the CW in October. “These categories are so crowded and crammed with incredible skill and integrity, and I feel prouder than ever to be included”, Winslet said accepting her award. “This is one of the greatest moments of my life”, she said.
Wolf Hall was named best limited series or TV movie and producer Colin Callender was joined by stars Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance as he accepted the award and made a plea to protect BBC funding.
“Steve Jobs” also was named best screenplay for Aaron Sorkin’s talky script, a surprising show of strength for a film that tanked at the box office and has faded somewhat as a top Oscar contender. It was his second nomination for the character, having been nominated 29 years ago for “Rocky”.
