CDC: Sushi made with frozen tuna linked to 62 Salmonella cases
Osamu Corporation of Gardena is recalling Frozen Yellow Fin Tuna Chunk Meat, primarily used in sushi.
There have been no cases in Florida, but the Centers for Disease Control said that frozen raw tuna is likely the source for the multistate outbreak. CDC’s National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System(NARMS) laboratory did microbial resistance studies on the clinical isolates from three people sickened in this outbreak, and of the isolates tested, one was resistant to ampicillin and two were susceptible to all antibiotics tested on the NARMS panel.
The company issued the second recall on July 21 for packages from a specific lot of frozen yellowfin tuna chunk meat sold to a company in Rancho Dominquez, Calif., that tested positive.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday a recall of raw tuna under a certain seafood distributor’s label, citing a possible salmonella contamination. Illness onset dates range from March 5, 2015 to July 7, 2015.
If you’re a sushi lover, listen up for this recall. “Affected products can be identified by four-digit purchase order numbers 8563 through 8599 located on each product carton box”, the CDC advisory stated.
Customers who bought the AFC-distributed tuna are urged to return it for a full refund.
People who become ill from the salmonella bacteria usually experience these symptoms about 12 to 72 hours after exposure: diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps.
Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. CDC asks anyone with symptoms to contact their health provider.
