Clemson hopeful sacks leader plays
The Alabama football team continued preparations for the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday afternoon, working a two-hour practice in full pads under the roof of the Hank Crisp Indoor Practice Facility. In his final game of his college career, the 1992 season, he won the national championship under head coach Gene Stallings and became the first member of his family to earn a college degree.
Shoe Station managers and employees will be on standby Monday, listening to the game. Deshaun Watson was able to work through his reads without serious pressure (32 attempts, one sack).
Five games after the loss against Alabama, Bowden resigned under pressure and Swinney was named Clemson’s interim coach. Deshaun Watson finished third in Heisman voting this season. Hubenak shook off five sacks and two turnovers to throw for 307 yards, including a 29-yard touchdown pass to Christian Kirk.
And that made all the difference 34 years ago, much like it will now. Watson and Gallman played well, and Clemson’s secondary was up to the challenge against OU’s solid receiving corps. But if it’s unable to do so… look out for the Tigers. Prediction: Alabama 41 – 28 Clemson.
On the Cotton Bowl field as the confetti gun set to blast, Alabama hybrid defender Ryan Anderson said: “I thought it just showed the brotherhood that we have”. That group was led by Timmy Jernigan, Mario Edwards, Lamarcus Joyner and Christian Jones (with future stars DeMarcus Walker, Ronald Darby and Jalen Ramsey seeing significant time as well).
On one side, you have the reigning Heisman Trophy victor, Alabama junior Derrick Henry, whose 2,061 rushing yards are the most in SEC history.
That defensive front insists that it be so, as would the nation’s foremost unit of any kind, a rotating menace chockablock with dynamic sorts. Alabama has A’Shawn Robinson.
But for the loony lateral of a beefy tight end for a lucky Arkansas on fourth and 25 in overtime at Ole Miss on November 7, Alabama wouldn’t have qualified for the SEC Championship game even with a better overall record than Ole Miss.
Watson, you have been warned. “You’re looking at a guy who grew up in the state of Alabama, and my dream was to play there”, Swinney said.
There certainly will be more questions about the line and the top-ranked Tigers (14-0) leading up to their matchup on January 11 in Arizona with the powerful Crimson Tide (13-1), which completely shut down Big Ten champion Michigan State 38-0 in the Cotton Bowl last Thursday night.
Dabo Swinney knows all about Alabama football. (Richard Mullaney) #16, (ArDarius Stewart) #13, they’re all good players.
But this will be the season’s biggest test, not only because of Henry, but because of a big and talented offensive line heavy on experience.
Clemson safety Travis Blanks piled on Scott’s take, noting the Tigers were underdogs in other big games, including Notre Dame, Florida State and Oklahoma in the CFP semifinals.
Spread attacks have been successful against Alabama in the past.
In the 2010 Iron Bowl the Auburn Tigers came back from a 24-0 deficit to beat the Crimson Tide 28-27. Alabama’s defensive line is so adept at eating blocks that linebackers like Reggie Ragland and Reuben Foster often dive into holes untouched to blow up plays.
He’s the key to making Clemson’s offense go.
Hitting explosive plays against Alabama is extremely hard, but something opponents that have had success in recent years against Alabama have done.
Watson gave Oklahoma fits in the Orange Bowl semifinal with 145 yards rushing and 187 yards passing, accounting for two total touchdowns.
