Roger Goodell: Oakland, San Diego, St. Louis NFL stadiums “inadequate”
Roger Goodell sent out a memo to the 32 National Football League owners outlining the requests he’s received from the Oakland Raiders, St. Louis Rams and San Diego Chargers for relocation to Los Angeles.
The St. Louis Regional Convention and Sports Complex Authority and the St. Louis NFL Stadium task force issued a formal response to Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke and statements he made in his application to move the team to Los Angeles.
A special owners meeting is scheduled this week in Houston, and relocation by one or two of those teams to Los Angeles will be discussed – and quite possibly voted on.
The lead negotiator for the city and county’s efforts to keep the San Diego Chargers in town has tried unsuccessfully to obtain a copy of the team’s application to relocate to Los Angeles and officials are concerned it might contain inaccuracies.
That is potentially good news for Oakland – and bad news for St. Louis, whose $1.1 billion riverfront stadium plan, replete with $400 million in public subsidies, was seen as the only one with any chance of passing muster with the league. The Raiders’ argument is that the city of Oakland has nothing resembling a new stadium plan to keep the team from pursuing relocation.
The Chargers and Raiders are planning a stadium in Carson, and the Rams are planning one in Inglewood.
In just a few days, the future of the San Diego Chargers could be decided at a hotel in Houston.
That’s just the latest development in the NFL’s relocation saga. The Chargers and Raiders jointly are proposing a stadium in Carson.
If an owner doesn’t like what decisions are made next week they won’t be able to blame Goodell for that. The postseason is upon us with 12 teams vying for the right to play in the 50th Super Bowl on February 8, the golden anniversary of the golden child and how apropos that will be. While it’s true that all three teams can significantly increase the values of their franchises by moving to L.A., such market value is similar to the market value of stocks or real estate: It’s only realized if and when the owner sells it.
Cole said a lot of owners recall fights in the stands when the Raiders last played in Los Angeles and question whether the team’s ownership has the money to succeed there.
Stan Kroenke’s attempt to relocate the St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles continues to get messy.
That doesn’t mean this new proposal will gain any traction.
It’s getting ugly in the fight between the Rams and the city of St. Louis.
Goodell’s memo clears what until recently appeared to be a potential major obstacle to Kroenke’s relocation plans: a viable stadium option in St. Louis.
However, Georgia Frontiere, a former chorus girl whose sixth husband was then Rams owner Carrol Rosenbloom, inherited the team when Rosenbloom mysteriously drowned in 1979.
And Mark Davis is going to be stuck out on the cold street corner with nothing but an empty book of matches, an intolerable stadium situation, a city that will not work with him, and a dream that’s dead.
