Mexico: Sean Penn interview helped locate drug lord ‘El Chapo’
We wanted to hear more about all of this, so we’ve called NPR’s Mexico correspondent Carrie Kahn.
“It’s false. The day that I don’t exist, it won’t reduce drug trafficking”.
He is unrepentant about his prolific drug trafficking business.
Penn described elaborate security measures – disposable phones and encrypted communications – that both he and Del Castillo took to keep the meeting secret. But apparently they were not enough. Guzman’s defense now has three days to present arguments against extradition and 20 days to present supporting evidence, beyond the plethora of other appeals they have already started filing.
In the Rolling Stone article, Guzman talked about his childhood and how he entered the drug trade, later becoming the head of the renowned Sinaloa drug cartel.
Guzman, who was one of the world’s most wanted drug traffickers, escaped from jail through a tunnel dug in the showers. Word came back a week later that Guzman agreed to the meeting, he wrote.
In a video recording that Guzman made after the face-to-face meeting, the drug lord said the content was an “exclusive for senorita Kate del Castillo and senor Sean Penn”.
USA magazine Rolling Stone on Saturday published the article “El Chapo Speaks” – written by United States actor Sean Penn, who interviewed Guzman – that shed light on the drug lord’s beginnings and other facets of his enigmatic life.
Penn’s representatives have not commented on the claims by Mexican officials.
“The Obama administration official told Fox News Sunday that he would “welcome extradition” of Guzman to the United States”.
The captured fugitive who entertained actor Sean Penn while on-the-lam is formally aware of two separate arrest warrants filed against Guzman in California and Texas, according to Politico.mx, a Spanish-language news site.
“I think the case to be made privately is ‘fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me”, said Andrew Porter, now in private practice. “They won’t challenge everything at once… they can drip, drip, milk it that way”.
His attorney has vowed a “tough” legal fight that could reach the Supreme Court.
Guzman was recaptured on Friday and returned to prison. And the latest escape in July, Guzman told Penn, was a well-planned operation. He spent more than 10 years on the run. after escaping from a different prison in 2001. The team noticed a lot of activity at the house Wednesday and the arrival of a vehicle early Thursday morning.
Guzman should consider using his influence for the good of Mexico, she wrote.
The marines were met with gunfire as they closed in. Marines climbed into the drains in pursuit.
But he went on to say that, now “I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world”.
The Mexican attorney general’s office now wants to question Del Castillo and Penn about the meeting, a federal official told AFP. 3, after he escaped.
A Rolling Stone spokeswoman did not immediately return requests for comment. However, it adds, the extradition of “El Chapo” to the U.S. is by no means a foregone conclusion, given that the process can take months.
