Gervais: I’ve been asked back to the Globes
BEST ACTOR While this certainly feels like Leonardo DiCaprio’s year to win after losing out five times during his storied career, he has won two Golden Globes before that obviously didn’t guarantee an Oscar win.
Globes win could boost DiCaprio’s chances to win an award at the Oscars which has long eluded him despite securing multiple nominations over the years.
“Listen”, he told the stars, “if you do win tonight, remember no one cares about that award as much as you do”. It is time that we recognise your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and from people that are out there to exploit them.
Sylvester Stallone also had a big night, winning best supporting actor in a film for reprising his role of Rocky Balboa in Creed.
“Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping deviant scum!” he said by way of greeting the crowd at the event organized by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
John Hamm got the Best Actor Drama (TV) for his role in “Mad Men”. “Wow, that meant a lot”, he said. Watch host Ricky Gervais insult the whole movie industry, find out who dressed up as a bear and check out Leonardo DiCaprio giving Lady Gaga evils as she collected her gong.
Gervais added, “I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out”.
Supporting Actress, Motion Picture: Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs.
Brie Larson was named the best actress drama category for her poignant portrayal of a woman held captive for years in an enclosed space with her five-year-old son in “Room”.
The Revenant was later named best drama, and Alejandro G Inarritu best director, while Ridley Scott’s The Martian won in the musical or comedy category.
Matt Damon, a Globe victor for actor in a comedy or musical, said backstage that Penn’s adventure was nothing new.
“She’s gonna be fine”, Lawrence said backstage.
We’ve known this was coming ever since the HFPA announced Gervais was returning after a three-year reprieve, during which the viewing public was left in the capable hands of a comedic duo who’d never dream of opening their monologue with a sewage spill of transphobia. I thought newcomer Alicia Vikander might score the Globe, but we’re still not sure if she’d get an Oscar nod for “Ex Machina” or “The Danish Girl”.
This year’s award was the third for Lawrence, who previously won best actress for “Silver Linings Playbook” and best supporting actress for “American Hustle”.
On the television side of the awards, the Amazon streaming series “Mozart in the Jungle” was named the best comedy series. Actors in both shows – Christian Slater for “Mr. Robot” and Gabriel Garcia Bernal for “Mozart in the Jungle” – also won.
The film also took home the award for best movie drama.
Denzel Washington was honoured with the Cecil B. DeMille award for his outstanding contribution to cinema and his Philadelphia co-star Tom Hanks did the honours of introducing him.
