Rams fans in LA rally for team’s return
The Rams’ relocation application says the National Football League would benefit from the team’s move to Los Angeles, leaving behind a lagging St. Louis market and a stadium proposal doomed for failure.
Goodell’s report, according to the source, informed owners that both Los Angeles stadium proposals “were ready for development”, but he made no recommendation as to which stadium should get built or which teams ultimately should call it home.
The main point of the report, per Rapoport, is that city leaders in St. Louis, San Diego and Oakland missed their opportunity to improve their stadium situations.
Dave Peacock, co-chairman of the state task force planning the $1.1 billion riverfront stadium in St. Louis, said that he had heard the news, but hadn’t seen the report, and wouldn’t comment.
Kroenke, a real estate billionaire and native Missourian, has proposed a $1.8 billion stadium in Inglewood, California, with plans to put the Rams back in the market they left to move to St. Louis in 1995. Chargers owner Dean Spanos and Raiders owner Mark Davis, who want to build a $1.75 billion stadium in Carson, are opposed to the Jones plan.
Calling their hometown market economically stagnant and plans for a billion-dollar new stadium a recipe for financial disaster, the St. Louis Rams on Wednesday released a withering list of reasons they want to leave for Southern California that brought immediate condemnation from the governor and fans alike. To make the loyalty a bit more impressive, she clamors to keep her beloved in Rams in St. Louis despite the team not giving her much to celebrate.
The NFL has posted an article to their website clarifying reports of Goodell’s letters to team owners. Now Cowboys and owner Jerry Jones has proposed a third option of the Chargers to share the stadium in Inglewood with the Rams according to multiple reports.
“It was a heartbreaking time when they left, and if you would have told me then that they might come back, I would have said you’re nuts”, said Randy Troy, whose father took him to Rams games at the Coliseum during quarterback Roman Gabriel’s MVP season in 1969.
The lead negotiator for the city and county’s efforts to keep the San Diego Chargers in town has tried unsuccessfully to obtain a copy of the team’s application to relocate to Los Angeles and officials are concerned it might contain inaccuracies.
Slay’s letter, meanwhile, comes a day after those owners met in NY to discuss the dueling relocation attempts. I firmly believe that the proposal we have jointly made is in the best interests of the entire League and is in complete compliance with the League’s relocation policies.
However, now the question is whether it will be one or two and which of the three franchises will get the green light. In one case (Oakland), there was a conceptual proposal without a formal offer.
“It’s unlikely those franchises considering relocation will all be able to find suitable, workable stadium deals in their home markets”, Carter said.
In a written statement Saturday, the St. Louis stadium task force said it is “confident our proposal will speak extremely well” for the city as owners deliberate in Houston.
