CES 2016: Oculus Rift Starting Price: $599
According to the Oculus Rift store, you can expect for your piece of the future to ship on May 28th, 2016, although there is a limit of one purchase per customer. Also, take a look around the internet and you’ll find reports that companies like Dell will be offering bundles that include the Rift and a PC.
The package includes the Oculus Rift headset (with built-in headphones), a mic, the sensor, a remote, and an Xbox One controller. We now know that the headsets cost $599 and that they will begin shipping on March 28.
Oculus offers a selection of Oculus-ready PCs on its site, which are in the neighborhood of $1,000 each.
Oculus Rift preorders opened at 8AM PST this morning via the Oculus Shop page at the price of $599/£499/ €699.
Our prediction of $500-600 was based on Palmer Luckey reiterating a statement that Rift and PC would add up to around $1,500.
Speaking during an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, Luckey responded to a question on the number of games that will launch for the Rift this year.
The Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has gone on general sale, marking the first time that the general public can buy the device that many think could bring virtual reality to the masses. Valkyrie is a space dogfighting game, putting players in the cockpit of their own virtual intergalctic ship, while Lucky’s Tale is a platformer game reminiscent of Super Mario Bros and Banjo-Kazooie. The Touch controller is expected to be released by the second half of the year.
But the Rift will require a fairly powerful computer.
It’ll be interesting to see how the Rift sells considering the fairly high price point.
