Tonya Couch behind bars in Tarrant County
The mother of “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch was flown Thursday from Los Angeles to Texas, where she is facing a felony charge for allegedly helping her 18-year-old son flee to Mexico while he was on probation in a case stemming from a deadly drunken driving crash.
The judge said another hearing will take place on Monday in regards to Couch’s bail, which has been set at $1 million.
Tonya Couch and her son left Texas after a video surfaced on social media in early December showing Ethan at an alcohol-fueled party. Her son, Ethan Couch, remained in a Mexican detention center Friday.
Patten said Couch plans to enter a plea of not guilty in court.
Tonya Couch appears before state District Judge Wayne Salvant in Fort Worth, Texas, Friday, Jan. 8, 2016. Anderson said that “it’s not a question of if he’s coming back, it’s a question of when he’s coming back”.
Her attorney, Stephanie Patten, filed documents Thursday asking the court to reduce Couch’s bail to $15,000 cash or surety. She recently arrived in Texas after being extradited from Mexico. It seems that Tonya Couch objects to the lighting and says she is having a hard time sleeping in jail.
Patten also said that Couch’s bail was way too high. The judge said that if the bond is lowered and she is released, Couch will have to wear an ankle monitor and hand over her passport. When he heard on Thursday that Tonya Couch had returned to Tarrant County, he was certain their hearings – his for aggravated assault of a public servant – would take place the same day.
Anderson expressed the Sheriff’s Office main focus is in bringing back to Tarrant County, Ethan Couch, who remains in Mexico, fighting extradition. The judge stated the complaint asserted Tonya Couch provided him with “means of avoiding arrest or affecting escape, by financing and transporting Ethan Couch and his flight from this jurisdiction and the court of the State of Texas”.
Ethan Couch was driving drunk and speeding near Fort Worth in June 2013 when he crashed into a disabled SUV, killing four people and injuring several others, including passengers in his pickup truck. She faces a maximum of 10 years prison.
