He had been arrested in 2014 on suspicion of encouraging terrorism, but later fled Britain and traveled to Syria while on bail.
Dhar was a fan of Nirvana and Arsenal soccer, British media reports.
“The last time I saw him it was about two months before he left and joined so-called Islamic State and we were laughing”, Robb Leech, a man who knew Dhar, tells BBC radio according to Reuters. He urged caution, pointing out that several people have been incorrectly named in the past.
The video, released on December 3, shows the man with a British accent directing the execution after describing Prime Minister David Cameron as an “imbecile” for dropping bombs on Syria.
The five prisoners kneeling in front of him are then shown to be executed. It has not yet been verified.
YouTube Authorities are trying to confirm whether a masked militant in the latest ISIS execution video is British-born Siddhartha Dhar.
Dhar, who was known as “Sid” to friends, enjoyed drinking, loved the bands Nirvana and Linkin Park, and had dreams of becoming a dentist, the Daily Mail reports, citing interviews with his family.
Official confirmation that it is Dhar in the video is unlikely.
Dhar was a Hindu living in Walthamstow, a suburb of East London.

“All I can say is I still really miss him, he’s still my brother”.

“I was in a state of shock”, said Konika Dhar. Henry Dare of London has said he believes the boy, who’s around 5 years old, is his grandson. “I can’t disown him”.
Downing Street also confirmed that security services have completed an “initial assessment” of the identity of the masked jihadi with a British accent who appears on the 10-minute IS film. The Foreign Office told Mashable there was no update on the investigation Tuesday morning.
