Kerry: China approach to North Korea hasn’t worked
South Korea on Friday resumed high-decibel propaganda broadcasts into North Korea as the United States ramped up pressure on China to bring Pyongyang to heel after its latest nuclear test.
The broadcasts, in rolling bursts from walls of loudspeakers at 11 locations along the heavily militarized border, blare rhetoric critical of the North Koran regime as well as “K-pop” music, ratcheting up tension between the rival Koreas.
A military official was quoted as saying that the loudspeakers will be operated at random day and night for about wo to six hours a day.
(CNN)South Korea turned up the volume in its war of words with its pugnacious northern neighbor North Korea on Friday, two days after the latter claimed it had tested a hydrogen bomb.
When animosities sharply rose in the spring of 2013 following North Korea’s third nuclear test, the USA took the unusual step of sending its most powerful warplanes – B-2 stealth bombers, F-22 stealth fighters and B-52 bombers – to drills with South Korea in a show of force. It is presumed that the Security Council will adopt a resolution by the end of the month containing new and stricter sanctions against North Korea.
North Korean defectors have said the broadcasts had left a lasting impression that there were songs without an ideological message, that spoke only of love. As a small country, we have suffered in the past, but now we have got a hydrogen bomb, there is nothing greater than this.
U.S. Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives could join forces in a rare display of unity to tighten sanctions on North Korea.
But an early analysis by the USA government was “not consistent with the claims that the regime has made of a successful hydrogen bomb test”, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.
According to North Korean state media, So is the author of forty books, with titles including “Quantum Mechanics” and “Elementary Particle Theory”.
Asked about a suggestion from U.S. Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump that China could do more to rein in North Korea, Hua said: “What constructive efforts have they made?”
North Korea also said it was capable of miniaturising the hydrogen bomb, in theory allowing it to be placed on a missile and threatening the US West Coast, South Korea and Japan.
Since hydrogen bombs detonate in two distinct stages, scientists use a series of complex measurements of the radioactive dust, including calculating the remaining nuclear fuel from the primary explosion, to distinguish hydrogen bombs from atomic bombs.
North Korea has said it needs a strong nuclear deterrent to keep the United States from invading.
South Korea Defense Minister Han Min-koo and U.S. Defense Secretary Ashton Carter Thursday discussed response measures the Korea-U.S. military alliance is considering, in addition to continued joint exercises.
Norsar said that based on the seismic readings, the event was equivalent to less than 10,000 tons of TNT, smaller than those of the atomic bombs used on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and far less than thermonuclear weapons that typically are as potent as millions of tons of TNT. But South Korea sees K-pop and propaganda as quick ways to show its displeasure – and a guaranteed irritant to the North’s sensitive and proud leadership.
Yonhap said Seoul had deployed missiles, artillery and other weapons systems near the border to swiftly deal with any possible North Korean provocation.
So irrational and irresponsible as Pyongyang’s nuclear development may seem, it is always worth remembering that North Korea has a very particular strategy in mind.
Criticising moves towards a new treaty banning nuclear weapons, Bishop stated that “the stark reality today remains that as long as nuclear weapons exist, many countries, including Australia, will continue to rely on nuclear deterrence to help prevent nuclear attack or coercion”.
His rapid rise in the Korean People’s Army was aided by being related to a guerrilla soldier who fought alongside North Korea’s founder President Kim Il Sung during the Japanese colonial period.
