Floyd Mayweather’s next bout has been revealed and it’s very underwhelming
Victor – who fought (and was beat by) Mayweather in 2011 – did have one suggestion for Floyd… drop Berto and swap him in instead.
Mayweather will be hoping to match Rocky Marciano’s undefeated record on September 12 in Las Vegas in his fight against Berto.
Many fans feel that the fight didn’t live up to its name dubbed the “Fight of the Century”.
And the best part – Mayweather is still paying those gourmet prices.
In the sport of boxing, securing a bout against the PPV king Floyd Mayweather Jr., is an equivalent of winning the lottery.
Mayweather’s record-setting megafight against Manny Pacquiao in May was largely condemned as a tiresome disappointment. However, those two wins came on the heels of consecutive losses for the 31-year-old Florida native, to Jesus Soto Karass and Robert Guerrero.
Berto was born and raised in Winter Haven, Florida, and is said to have gotten his boxing skills from his father who taught him how to fight. In an interview with TMZ, Ortiz called the fight “embarrassing”, saying that “they both need to retire”.
No victory is ever guaranteed, but Berto seems like a safe opponent for Mayweather.
Even though Mayweather himself raised the possibility that he might fight Berto on September 12, the suggestion was not widely taken seriously in June.
A bigger obstacle to putting the fight on CBS, an industry source said, is determining how much advertising revenue can be hoarded for the fight on such short notice since that is where the income is generated.
Last week we announced speculation was rife that Andre Berto would be that man, but thanks to the team at TMZ Sports, this has finally been confirmed. On paper, Berto would appear no match for the experienced Mayweather, having lost three of his last six fights.
Now, with Pacquiao defeated, the new monster arbitrarily assigned by critics to make Mayweather look bad is Gennady Golovkin, a middleweight titlist and beloved knockout artist.
