Trump, Cruz deadlocked for top spot in Iowa
Trump leads the GOP field with 31 percent in Quinnipiac University’s new poll, followed closely by Cruz’s 29 percent.
Trump has since repeatedly brought up the issue unprompted on the stump and said this weekend in a pair of Sunday television interviews that “I really don’t know” if Cruz qualifies as a natural born citizen.
Sen. Ted Cruz Sunday called questions about his eligibility to be president a “circus sideshow”, saying the whole question of what constitutes natural-born citizenship has been settled. Legal scholars generally agree the description covers foreign-born children of U.S. parents. Most believe that since Cruz became an American citizen at birth, he is eligible to run for president, but Trump’s remarks have prompted numerous politicians to wonder whether Cruz is decisively eligible for the presidency.
“I say to Ted, as a Republican because I think it’s very important, you gotta get it straightened out”, Trump said, urging Cruz to seek a “declaratory judgment” from a judge so there’s no doubt about his eligibility.
Cruz said he does not intend to engage with Trump.
“You’re going to have a deportation force, and you’re going to do it humanely”, Trump said, CNN reported. “If you don’t vote, this country is going to go to hell”, he said.
For now, there is nervous acceptance that two of the Republican Party’s most divisive figures may stay at the top of the presidential pack in the polls leading up to the first month of voting.
“We don’t have any system that knocks on the doors of every person in America”, Cruz told Tapper. I like Ted, but he’s got to straighten out his problem. “‘Well I didn’t say it, someone else said it. I’m just repeating what someone else said.’ Come on, man. Let’s get to the issues”.
CLEAR LAKE, Iowa- Temperatures struggled to reach double digits Saturday afternoon, but that didn’t stop hundreds of Donald Trump supports from enduring the frigged temperatures to hear the Republican front runner for themselves.
Trump is zeroing in on Cruz’s Canadian birth as he tries to remove the senator as a threat to his candidacy.
Rubio said the number one responsibility of the commander in chief is to keep Americans safe and argued Cruz has been too soft on national security.
Meanwhile, in New Hampshire, which holds a GOP primary February 9, Trump comes in at 30%, well ahead of Rubio at 14%. All of these PACs and frankly, Ted Cruz has two guys that are giving him a fortune.
“The people who will not vote Republican if he [Trump] is the nominee make me nervous, that is the only hesitation that I have”, added a Trump supporter, saying she could “possibly” change her vote from Trump for that reason. They’re dismayed because they’re seeing conservatives uniting behind our campaign.
