$1.3 billion Powerball jackpot a world record

There are 292.2 million combinations of the five numbers plus one Powerball number in the game – which means a gambler could spend $584.4 million to guarantee a win by buying every set of numbers. They will also display a Powerball jackpot amount of $999 million until the jackpot is won.

The tickets were sold in Elizabethtown, Louisville, Mayfield and Richmond.

The player hit every number except the final Powerball number, winning a million dollar prize.

The winning numbers will be announced at 10:59 PM tonight, Eastern Time.

It may seem like a no-brainer investment, considering the payoff will be at least $1.3 billion. The next drawing is Wednesday night.

But last week ticket purchases surged, driving up the size of the pot. Most states have a grace period for winners to claim their earnings; most are around 180 days to claim a winning ticket.
