Eagles to interview Coughlin on Monday
The Philadelphia Eagles plan to interview former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin for their head coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports Saturday. Tom Coughlin is mainly known for his time with the New York Giants as their HC and winning two Super Bowl rings with them in the span of 12 seasons. However, the Eagles did request and were granted an interview with the former New York Giants head coach.
But if something doesn’t happen soon, then it’s possible the Eagles are in the coaching search for the long haul with an undetermined candidate still on a playoff team eventually emerging.
NY had missed the playoffs in six out of the last seven years; their lone appearance during that span was their Super Bowl XLVI victory against the New England Patriots. This is a critical aspect of the job for a head coach, as players need to buy into what a coach preaches in order for the team to experience any success. I don’t exactly know. Coughlin said he is open to another head coaching position in the “right situation” but would also consider an offer from the Giants, a longtime rival of the Eagles. “He was such a great coach for us and did so much for our organization”. Eli Manning, who has adored working for both men. Pederson has served under Chiefs head coach, and former Eagles head coach, Andy Reid for the past three seasons. San Francisco is team seemingly in turmoil and without a franchise quarterback – unless Coughlin views Colin Kaepernick as a franchise quarterback, coming off a disastrous and injury-riddled season.
In their 12 years as a head coach/quarterback combo, the two have won a total of 97 regular season games together, three NFC East division championships and have brought to two Super Bowl titles to the city of the NY.
The Eagles confirmed they have completed their interview with Coughlin.
Miami seemed like the best destination for Coughlin, if the 69-year-old wanted to keep coaching, but Adam Gase scooped him there. The Giants did not make the playoffs the last four seasons, and they had two consecutive 6-10 finishes. “Thank you coach Coughlin”. But the possibility of Coughlin going directly to the Eagles from the Giants likely would be jarring for the organization and its fans. They have made the postseason in just two of the 13 years since. We’re not supposed to be able to say that and do that.
Tom Coughlin will talk to the Eagles this week.
“Winning, losing, playing hard, playing well, doing it for each other, winning the right way; winning the right way is a very, very important thing to me and all of our coaches”, Coughlin said.
