Hillary’s Political Director Calls Bernie Sanders ‘Disappointing’ for
Sen. Bernie Sanders accused Hillary Clinton of taking an increasingly aggressive stance against him because she’s nervous that he is beating her in the race for the Democratic presidential nomination. Iowa’s population is 87.8 percent non-Hispanic white, according to U.S. Census data. And Tam, it’s that time of the race when it’s actually OK to talk about the horse race.
TAMARA KEITH, BYLINE: Indeed. She doesn’t. But if Iowa and New Hampshire are must-wins for anyone, it’s Sanders. If you would like to discuss another topic, look for a relevant article.
In New Hampshire, which holds its primaries a week after the polls close in Iowa, Trump bagged 30 percent of likely Republican primary voters, more than doubling the level of support for closest challengers Rubio (14 percent) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (12 percent). On Monday, Clinton rolled out more components of hers, calling for an additional 4 percent surcharge on people earning more than $5 million per year.
The discussion at the forum didn’t just focus on the horserace as the candidates weighed in on a range of issues affecting various minority groups. “But on the issue of guns, let me be very clear I support the president”.
Sanders has sufficiently come around on the issue of gun control, Biden said, even as the Clinton campaign continued to launch withering criticism of Sanders’ past vote allowing legal immunity for gun manufacturers whose products are involved in fatal shootings.
In a rare Sunday morning interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation”, Clinton challenged Sanders’ position that his moderate voting record on guns was a result of his attentive representation of Vermont values. “I think we’re gaining steam here in Iowa”. She’s already proposed ideas aimed at cracking down on inversions and other mechanisms that USA corporations use to cut their tax bills.
“I believe the people of Iowa have a way of sorting through things”, O’Malley said. Suddenly, Bernie Sanders is not a nice guy. And so he is not being moved on this by Clinton’s push.
“Secretary Clinton and her campaign is in serious trouble”, Sanders told reporters Monday after a campaign stop in Pleasantville, Iowa.
MCEVERS: There not just talking about guns – right? – these two Democratic candidates.
Sanders, for example, supports legislation pending in Congress that would guarantee workers three months of paid family and medical leave. And now they’re fighting over how to pay for it. Sanders wants a small payroll tax.
Sanders’ camp, meanwhile, claims that the Vermont Senator has been an active supporter of gun safety legislations.
