‘The Revenant’ and ‘The Martian’ take top Golden Globes
The Hollywood Reporter’s awards columnist Scott Feinberg tweeted “none of this means anything for the Oscar race”, though many Golden Globe winners are consistent with Oscar predictions this year.
Leonardo DiCaprio has taken a leap forward in his quest for his first Oscar, with a Golden Globes win for his intense performance as a 19th century fur trapper in “The Revenant”.
And Brie Larson – as predicted – took home the Lead Actress, Drama award. While its best picture chances might have lost a little steam, don’t count Damon out just. Let’s quickly go through who won for what and other details.
Never mind The Martian winning three comedy awards, or Jennifer Lawrence being named best actress in a comedy for her role in another non-comedy, Joy. Of the 11 series nominated for either Best Comedy or Drama, nearly half were from a streaming service.
Quentin Tarantino accepted the award for Ennio Morricone’s score for his “The Hateful Eight” – a victor that presenter Jamie Foxx initially read as “Straight Outta Compton” in a parody of the Miss Universe victor debacle.
“I share the award with all the indigenous communities around the world”, DiCaprio said in his acceptance speech. Morricone last won the Golden Globe in 2000 for Giuseppe Tornatore’s “Legend of 1900”.
Pioneer-era tale “The Revenant” won three awards including best drama film, beating out front-runners “Carol”, a lesbian romance, and investigative journalism drama “Spotlight”.
The Revenant swept the board at last night’s 73rd annual Golden Globe awards.
Predictions seem to agree that Golden Globe victor Larson, who won best actress in a drama, will win the title of best actress for her role in Room at the Oscars as well. So did his counterpart Rachel Bloom who won best actress-comedy for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Winslet is expected to be in the Best Supporting Actress Oscar mix when the nominations are announced later this week.
Its leading man also had a starring role on Twitter after being caught pulling a face when he was bumped into by Lady Gaga as she went to collect a prize.
Best Original Song went to Spectre’s “Writing on the Wall”, performed by Sam Smith and co-written with Jimmy Napes. Foxx also introduced his daughter Corinne as Miss Golden Globes 2016.
Mendelsohn was in the running for supporting actor in a TV series for his Netflix drama Bloodline, but Mr Robot’s Christian Slater was the victor.
Other winners for movie include: Sylvester Stallone (Creed) for best supporting actor, Aaron Sorkin (Steve Jobs) for best screenplay, Inside Out for best animated film and Hungary’s Son of Saul for best foreign film.
