Nets fire coach Hollins, reassign GM King
Mikhail Prokhorov has seen his win-now philosophy blow up in his face. 400 and 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games, while the Nets are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall and 0-4 ATS in their last four home games. Thanks to the Garnett/Pierce trade, the Nets don’t control their own first round pick until 2019, which would seem to make rebuilding through the draft almost impossible. The Nets still owe the Celtics their 2016 and 2018 first round draft picks plus the right to swap slots in the 2017 draft.
“After careful consideration, I’ve concluded that it’s time for a fresh start and a new vision for the direction of the team”, Prokhorov said.
Brown said of getting the call on Sunday morning that he would be taking over the Nets, “After I woke up, which was about 9:30, talked to my wife, was getting ready to start the day”.
When Mikhail Prokhorov bought the Nets back in 2010, many thought the club had the potential become one of the NBA’s landmark franchises. “I want to stress also one thing, and for me it is a very important lesson”. We need not only players who want to play for us, but players who can play for us.
Brown said he spoke with Prokhorov earlier Monday and believes the Russian billionaire wants to get a longer look at some of the Nets’ youth.
The San Antonio Spurs have had a soft schedule for much of the season, but know that is all about to change. “We have everything the best”, Prokhorov said, adding that he is “really optimistic” and “all in”.
Prokhorov is determined to be more involved with the Nets now and he said at his press conference on Monday that he expects the Nets to be championship contenders next season. Yes. “I am all in”. The GM position will remain open until a replacement is named. “He’s a fighter and he’ll go out and do it the way he thinks is best to do it and he won’t apologize for it. And [if] it works, it works”. Calipari continually denies that he will leave Kentucky, but at the right price Calipari could end up with the Nets.
“Coach Cal is a great coach”, he said. “We’re not in a hurry”. We put a lot of names on the list. But he vowed to be around Brooklyn more for the time being to lead the search for new leadership, adding he will personally meet all candidates. But at no point did Prokhorov express a desire to change his aggressive strategy. I found it very engaging talking about basketball and talking about the team itself.
But would Prokhorov be the one orchestrating the rebuilding plan, or would he allow his future GM and coach to have final say?
With the Nets clearly looking to re-invent themselves, things could get interesting in the next six months, even if it’s unclear who is calling the shots today.
