President Obama Dismisses Gun Control Conspiracy Theories, Says He Won’t Seize
Guns are a potent issue in US politics.
The town hall-style event, called “Guns in America” and hosted by CNN’s Anderson Cooper, will be held at 8 p.m. Eastern Time on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Obama asked, visibly taken aback.
But the partisanship strangling Washington soon had Obama complaining that Republicans were obstructionist and unreasonable while GOP leaders saw him as polarizing and patronizing.
Obama has struggled to toughen gun restrictions during his presidency, even after a string of mass shootings left more than 400 people dead in 2015.
The White House portrays the NRA, the nation’s largest gun group, as possessing a disproportionate influence over politicians that has prevented new gun laws despite polls that show broad support for measures like universal background checks. Roughly 100 people were invited to attend.
The town hall came just two days after Obama announced executive actions designed, among other goals, to broaden the scope of gun sales subject to background checks. He said: “She was absolutely right”.
The White House has said that the town hall will include Americans of all beliefs on the hot-button topic of gun control. Our position is consistently mischaracterised.
“If you listen to the rhetoric, it is so over the top, and so overheated”, Obama said. Are you suggesting the notion that we are creating a plot to take everybody’s guns away so we can impose martial law is a conspiracy?
But the President found himself on the spot as well.
Among those asking questions was Taya Kyle, widow of Chris Kyle, whose story was depicted in last year’s “American Sniper”. Some think this is a good thing, and believe all gun sellers should have to abide by the same rules. Obama met with Attorney General Loretta Lynch on Monday and said that his proposals are “well within my legal authority”.

The NRA fired back at Obama while the town hall was still going on.
“At least let’s figure it out”.
In the column, Obama called for a unification between gun owners and non-gun owners.
“He doesn’t support the individual right to own a firearm”.
“So what are we going to talk about – basketball?”
“There’s nothing in this executive order that will make it harder for criminals to get guns”, Sypien said. “If we aren’t allowed to have them, then he shouldn’t either”.
President Barack Obama says gun ownership is a very divisive issue because Americans in urban and rural areas live in different realities.
