Stallone, Lawrence, DiCaprio, ‘Mr. Robot’ win Golden Globe Awards
Leonardo DiCaprio had a formidable foe in Alejandro G. Inarritu’s The Revenant, and I do not mean the bear, a CGI construct, that some rumor raped him.
Sylvester Stallone also had a big night, winning best supporting actor in a film for reprising his role of Rocky Balboa in Creed.
The Revenant now appears brilliantly positioned for next month’s Oscars, with Iñárritu also named best director (drama) at the Golden Globes.
Mark Wahlberg, Jonah Hill, Amy Schumer, Jaimie Alexander and Ricky Gervais, returning to hosting duties for the first time in four years, were among the celebs who couldn’t resist cursing.
Best sight gag of the night: When the camera cut to TV comedy nominee Aziz Ansari, he was reading a book titled, “Losing to Jeffrey Tambor with Dignity”.
In a previous interview with CBC News, Tootoosis said he didn’t know much about the star of the film until he returned home and was shown DiCaprio’s movies Titanic and Gangs of NY. It is considered to be the most prestigious award after the Oscars and the Grammy awards.
Only three awards enjoyed any sort of link to the LGBT community: Lady Gaga for best actress in a TV miniseries or movie for American Horror Story: Hotel; Taraji P. Henson’s well-deserved best actress in a TV drama prize for Empire; and Sam Smith’s best original song gong for Spectre’s “Writing’s On the Wall”. The Globes have a reputation for heaping adoration on A-listers, but in this case the award was warranted. So did his counterpart Rachel Bloom who won best actress-comedy for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
Gervais’ snark aside, the Golden Globes have worked for years to shed an image of eccentric selections made by a group of little-known worldwide journalists. Best comedy series was a similar upset, with Amazon’s “Mozart in the Jungle”, winning over the HBO heavyweight “Veep”.
“So now I’m thinking more about what it is I want to say and what I want to leave on Earth”.
What if a network aired an awards show and you couldn’t hear half of it?
The Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement honoree, often an emotional high point in the awards, also lacked a memorable moment. While it is considered a lock for a Best Picture nomination on Thursday, the film apparently did not win the favor of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and received no awards on Sunday.
