Philadelphia Police Investigate Claim That Shooting Suspect Linked to Radicals
Philadelphia police officials on… The spokesperson did not comment on the other charges but said that the district attorney’s office was “reviewing the case for general information” after Archer’s arrest Thursday night.
Edward Archer, top left, is accused of shooting officer Jesse Hartnett, top right, while the policeman sat in his patrol auto. Ross said Archer told investigators he believed police enforced laws counter to the Quran.
Yesterday, Philadelphia police claimed they have received a tip that the “the threat is not over” and further attacks on police officers may follow.
“He’s been getting worse”, she said, adding that he ignored requests by the family to get psychiatric help.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported police, citing the tipster, said Archer was associated with three other men in the same radical organization, and was not even considered the most extreme of the group.
“We had the suspect upstairs. Where’s it going to lead us, if anywhere?'”
She said: “He’s OK”.
Police say that later, the officer stood by the emergency room entrance when the male came from behind and attempted to grab the officers gun from his holster.
Later in the same broadcast, Megyn Kelly drew a sharp distinction between how the “straight shooting” police chief described the attack and what the politically correct mayor had to say in the same press conference. The officer jumped out of his cruiser to give chase, shooting Archer in the buttocks.
Hartnett, 33, was in critical but stable condition, recovering Sunday at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.
It was unclear how the suspect obtained his firearm, which was stolen from police in October 2013, authorities said.
The suspect, who was apprehended shortly afterwards by other officers, has reportedly told detectives he was “following Allah”.
Archer eventually pleaded guilty to simple assault and carrying a gun without a license.
Philadelphia’s Muslim leaders also condemned the shooting.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams released a statement saying he was “sickened” by reports of the attack and called on the New York Police Department to conduct a full investigation “not only to identify all those responsible for this horrific attack, but also to determine if everything possible was done to protect the victim and the public”.
Surveillance footage of the attack showed Archer dressed in a white, long-sleeved tunic.
“We’ve already established why he believes he did it, and that’s probably enough”, Ross said.
Archer allegedly shot Hartnett in his patrol auto, striking him three times in the arm, Police Commissioner Richard Ross told reporters Friday.
Ross called it “absolutely amazing” that Harnett survived.
“He’s a tough guy”, he said.
Police officers nearby arrested him.
Hartnett was shot during an unprovoked ambush late Thursday night.
The imam of a local mosque where Archer worshipped, Asim Abdur Rashid, said Archer’s Muslim name was Abdul Shaheed.
“This is a criminal with a stolen gun trying to kill one of our officers”.
