Dolphins interim coach Dan Campbell interviews to keep job
The Miami Dolphins are making progress in talks with Adam Gase to become their coach, a person connected to the team said Saturday.
The Browns have also interviewed Detroit defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, Jacksonville offensive assistant Doug Marrone; and Dallas defensive secondary coach Jerome Henderson, who previously worked in Cleveland.
Bears coach John Fox could be looking for a new offensive coordinator very soon.
Gase sounded Saban-like at his introductory press conference when he said: “The focus for us is going to be about the process”. “That’s more than half my life”. “I feel like I’ve been doing it for the last three years”.
The move to get Gase happened quickly. “Every week is a growing experience”. “I feel like when we do put a staff together we’re all going to be able to help him get a little bit better”.
In Gase’s first season as offensive coordinator for Denver in 2013, the Broncos scored an NFL-record 606 points and advanced to the Super Bowl.
In addition to setting National Football League team records, Gase also helped quarterback Peyton Manning have the most prolific season of any quarterback in National Football League history. Manning started working on his statement about Gase at 6 a.m. Saturday. He’s extremely bright on all things football… he’ll be an excellent head coach, without a doubt. “He is ready for this for sure”.
“I think everything was happening very quickly, as far as bouncing around from one team to the other”, Gase said. At the end of the day, Gase is just another OC with limited success that someone is hoping will blossom in the head coaching role.
Only once since 2001 have the Dolphins managed to reach the post-season and they not appeared in the playoffs for the last seven years.
Gase takes over for interim head coach Dan Campbell, who in turn took over for fired head coach Joe Philbin after the first month of the season.
Gase, who is 37, has always been viewed as the front-runner for the job, and sources within the organization say it was a unanimous decision among the selection committee. Gase comes to Miami after stints as offensive coordinator for the Denver Broncos and then Chicago Bears.
In Denver, Gase began as a receivers coach in 2009-10 before coaching quarterbacks in 2011-12, and eventually becoming the coordinator in 2013. He’s one of their eight coaches since their most recent playoff victory in 2000.
