NRA’s Chris Cox Responds to Obama’s Gun Control “Town Hall”
The town hall event comes two days after Obama’s executive actions to restrict gun ownership, including expanded background checks for guns purchased at gun shows or on line.
Later, Mr Trump said Mr Obama should take action to protect Americans, but through legislation, not executive action.
“Let me just jump in”, said Cooper, who was moderating the discussion.
Following the meeting, the New York Times published an opinion column written by Obama outlining how he will not support any presidential candidate who refuses to back gun reform.
Like Robach, O’Donnell touted: “The President promises to take his position on gun reform to the ballot box. Still, there are steps we can take now to save lives”, he wrote in the piece, which will appear in Friday’s newspaper.
Bottom line, if you’re making money from selling a gun you must run a background check. Women, who are about half as likely as men to be gun owners, are about evenly split on the question (47 percent say they will be effective, 50 percent not), while men mostly say they won’t work (64 percent not effective vs. 34 percent who say they will be effective).
It began with Tuesday’s press conference during which Obama announced he would use his executive actions to circumvent Congress and close certain loopholes that allow easy access to guns.
Measures within the President’s initiative include background checks, expanded registration, additional examiners, and increased funding for enforcement and technology, as well as $500 million for mental health initiatives.
“The notion that we are creating a plot to take everybody’s guns away so that we can impose martial law…”
President Barack Obama tore into the nation’s largest gun lobby accusing it of peddling an “imaginary fiction” that has distorted the debate about firearms violence.
Obama sought tougher laws after the Newtown massacre, but said he was foiled by the NRA. “If I have a auto and I give it to you, Mr. President, and I don’t transfer a title, and you’re in an accident, it’s on me”. “Is that controversial except on some website?” “I’ve been very good for gun manufacturers”. Cleo Pendleton, whose daughter was shot and killed near Obama’s Chicago home, asked about his proposals to stop gun trafficking across state lines.
Chuck Michel, president of the California Rifle and Pistol Association, called the actions “ill-conceived” and a “presidential power grab”.
A spokesperson from the organization told CNN that the NRA saw “no reason to participate in a public relations spectacle orchestrated by the White House”.
