Mexico: Sean Penn’s meeting with ‘El Chapo’ was key to capture
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is escorted by soldiers during a presentation at the hangar belonging to the office of the Attorney General in Mexico City, January 8, 2016. But despite the end of his freedom, a circus was just beginning.
The extradition bid comes as new details about Guzman’s surprise meeting with Sean Penn in October emerged, with a newspaper publishing pictures showing that the USA actor was monitored by the authorities. 9, 2016, Rolling Stone magazine published an interview that Guzman apparently gave to Penn in his hideout in Mexico months before his recapture.
But Corchado says despite the continuing violence, Mexican journalists “will continue to keep trying to find the truth and keep trying to shine the light”. Such Hollywood theatrics added another twist to the surreal life of the two-time prison escapee.
The Mexican government has released video of the raid that led to the arrest of wanted drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman last Friday.
Attorney General Arely Gomez said on Friday that Guzman had met with unnamed actors and producers to discuss making a biopic about himself, and that it was part of a “new line of investigation”.
In the Eastern District of NY, for example, a 49-page grand jury indictment accuses Guzman of running a cartel that imported “multi-ton quantities of heroin, methamphetamine and marijuana into the United States” and of employing hit men who carried out murders, kidnapping, tortures and other acts of violence.
“Extradition cases historically take time, but they usually prevail”, Miller said.
A month before he escaped, USA authorities had sought his extradition.
After judges rule on the extradition, the foreign ministry has to issue a decision, which Guzman can appeal.
Mexican actress Kate del Castillo accompanied Penn to the meeting at an undisclosed location.
The article describes a man on the run who appeared to be anything but, as he sipped tequila in a “casual patterned silk shirt and pressed black jeans”.
In the interview with Penn published by Rolling Stone, Guzman said he felt neither remorse nor responsibility for smuggling billions of dollars worth of drugs into the United States.
“I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats”, he told Penn.
Authorities launched the process on Sunday – two days after his capture – based on petitions from courts in California and Texas on charges that include drug trafficking and homicide.
The 20-meter long passage leads to a steel hatch door, which officials said opens to the city’s storm drain system.
But the timing of the interview coincides with reported sightings and near-misses.
Guzman’s attorney said he hasn’t been able to speak with his client, which he claims violates Guzman’s rights. At the time, they said, he suffered injuries to his leg and face as he evaded capture.
“You can argue it’s morally reprehensible”.
During the shootout, Guzman escaped through a tunnel that was hidden behind a mirror.
Much speculation has focused on Rolling Stone’s controversial story and how it came to be.
Penn was unreachable for a few days, then later contacted him and said the interview had happened.
“I seriously doubt that charges will be brought against them even though Sean Penn took extraordinary steps to prevent authorities from using his phone to track the whereabouts of Chapo”, said Mike Vigil, a former senior official at the US Drug Enforcement Administration.
What followed were months of top-secret editing and consultations with a lawyer.
“It can go as slow or as fast as they want it to go”, Weinstein said.
