Prokhorov: Easy decision to begin Nets’ reset now
When Mikhail Prokhorov bought the Nets back in 2010, many thought the club had the potential become one of the NBA’s landmark franchises.
Whoever takes over in Brooklyn for the long haul will inherit a mess. “It’s going to take time, but I think he has the right mindset to help turn this thing around”. The GM position will remain open until a replacement is named. “There’s a lot of pressure and attention. We need to play hard and play together as long as we’re out there”.
There is a strategy in place, Prokhorov assured. It was said that King would stay within the organization, or “reassigned”, but Mikhail Prokhorov clarified what type of role he may have. “But for the time being it’s not his job”.
Brown spoke highly of Hollins, who was sacked Sunday.
During the first 24 minutes, Brooklyn kept the game competitive as they were only down seven. “We always say the seat is hot – there’s a reason why it’s hot”. “We weren’t getting results”. “I woke up to my phone just going insane”.
With a relatively young core of Williams, Johnson and Brook Lopez, surrounding them with experienced National Basketball Association champions was not such a bad idea. Young is optimistic about having a fresh voice in the locker room, calling Brown a zero-tolerance, no-excuses guy who was already very vocal with the team as an assistant. “And as soon as we’re ready, as soon as deal is fixed, you will be the first to know”. He’s also not ready to set any specific goals.
“[Sunday] was a little bittersweet”, Brown said. “Obviously we haven’t played well”. He added that he just wants to free his players up to be themselves on the court. But we need to find out what we have.
Kentucky coach John Calipari, who formerly coached the Nets in New Jersey, could be on it.
Prokhorov, in further comments via a YES Network telecast, declined to answer whether Calipari would be a candidate for the job. The key word Prokhorov used while discussing the decision-making process was discipline.
“GM Billy King is conceding privately what we all know: The Nets aren’t making the playoffs”. I want us to take advantage of where we are, playing in Brooklyn, playing in NY. “Our business just sucks”, Popovich added. He said he has learned some lessons over the past six years – though he did not elaborate much other than to say that not all players and coaches can handle the atmosphere in NY – but that he doesn’t think his approach is what doomed the team.
King was Prokhorov’s first significant hire, and he aggressively attempted to fashion the Nets into a team capable of winning immediately and meeting Prokhorov’s championship edict. They had made the playoffs every season since relocating in 2012, but they are 10-27 as mentioned, only better than the league-worst Philadelphia 76ers, according to Fox Sports. Having said that, the Nets did so at the expense of their salary cap.
