Affluenza Teen’s Mom Suffers Brokefluenza: Son
The mother of the infamous “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch has been released on Tuesday on a reduced bail after her lawyer complained that the initial $1 million bail was excessive.
Couch posted bond Monday night after a judge agreed to lower the amount from $1 million to just $75,000.
The much-reviled mom is accused of helping her 18-year-old son run from authorities. When asked who was paying Couch’s legal bills, McWilliams answered “me, so far”, per NBC News.
She will not be able to leave the home unless she has appointments with doctors or her lawyer.
The monitor is one of many restrictions state District Judge Wayne Salvant placed on Couch during her bond reduction hearing Monday.
Tonya Couch, who said that her account was frozen which prevented her from posting the full bail, was released on a $750,000 bond and will be required to wear electronic monitoring equipment. Couch is charged with hindering the apprehension of a felon after she and her son, Ethan Couch, were caught in a Mexican resort city.
Two Tarrant County sheriff deputies escorted Couch from the north door of the jail Tuesday to the Tarrant County Community Supervision and Corrections Department two blocks away. Tonya Couch was quickly deported and had been in the Tarrant County Jail since Thursday.
“Hopefully, the judge’s restrictions will prevent that”, he said. Couch, who killed four people in a 2013 drunken driving crash, is now being held in an immigration detention center in Mexico.
A psychiatrist testifying on behalf of Ethan Couch, then 16, at his 2013 trial in juvenile court, contended his family’s wealth had left him so spoiled that it impaired his judgment to tell right from wrong.
Tonya Couch, the mother of “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch, was released from jail Tuesday as expected, CNN affiliate KTVT reported.
Authorities say Tonya Couch took $30,000 and fled with Ethan to Mexico out of fear that her son would be put behind bars for violating his probation. The group reportedly plans to use the petition to urge a judge to transfer Couch’s probation sentence to the adult system before a hearing set for January 19.
According to the arrest warrant for Tonya Couch, the mother withdrew $30,000 from the bank on the day after that video first appeared.
