Capitals’ Ovechkin scores 500th career goal
Alex Ovechkin made history on Sunday when he netted his 500th career goal with3:41 to play in the second period against the Ottawa Senators.
The goal, his 25th of the season, came late in second period while on the power play in Washington’s home game against the Ottawa Senators.
At 801 games, the Russian winger is the fifth-fastest player to 500 goals, trailing only Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky (575 games), Mario Lemieux (605), Mike Bossy (647) and Brett Hull (693).
Since entering the National Hockey League in 2005-06, Ovechkin has posted 150 more goals and 50 more points than any player in the National Hockey League.
Tomas Tatar also scored and Petr Mrazek made 30 saves to help the Red Wings end a four-game losing streak to Anaheim.
Playing on arguably the best Washington Capitals team of his tenure in 2015-16, Alex Ovechkin hopes to soon add one of the few things missing from his resume, a Stanley Cup Championship.
The goal comes from right around the face-off dot, where he’s scored over and over throughout the years, making it a ideal way for the goal to come.
The 30-year-old Capitals captain has 433 assists to go with his 501 career goals.
The Capitals have won 10 consecutive games at Verizon Center dating to November 21, their longest home winning streak since a franchise-record 13 consecutive games from January 5 – March 6, 2010.
EDMONTON, Alberta – Florida directed only 14 shots on goal, but got goals from Jaromir Jagr and Jonathan Huberdeau beat Edmonton. Zach Parise had the only goal for Minnesota, scoring for the first time against his former team. With Ovechkin are T.J. Oshie (77), Nicklas Backstrom (19), Karl Alzner (27) and Matt Niskanen (2).
“It was a special moment”, Ovechkin said during a press conference after the game.
