Jimmy Fallon: Donald Trump ‘Hasn’t Even Started’ On Hillary Clinton
With polls suggesting that the Democratic race is getting tighter in the first-caucus state of Iowa and the first-primary state of New Hampshire, Bernie Sanders has won the support of one of the nation’s most prominent progressive networks.
A Quinnipiac poll shows Sanders is leading Secretary Clinton by five points in Iowa, a month ago Clinton enjoyed an 11 point lead.
Sanders now holds a substantial 14-point lead over Clinton in New Hampshire, according to a Monmouth University poll released Tuesday.
AMES, Iowa (AP) – Facing a narrowing primary contest, Hillary Clinton ripped into rival Bernie Sanders on Tuesday, saying the Vermont senator was offering unrealistic policies and overstating his anti-establishment credentials.
The polls add to mounting pressure on Mrs. Clinton, who was seen for months as an overwhelming favorite in the race, to avoid another upset from an insurgent Democratic challenger after her 2008 loss to Senator Barack Obama for the party’s nomination.
President Obama may be resisting calls to endorse a Democratic presidential candidate, but his vice president came awfully close to endorsing Vermont Sen.
The former secretary of state also hit Sanders on how he’s going to pay for his proposals as his campaign has said they will lay that out before the February 1 caucuses. “Look at the last national poll and you find that Bernie Sanders is beating Donald Trump by 13 points, Hillary Clinton by seven points”. Sanders has said he wants to make higher education free; Clinton has focused on making it more affordable for the poor and middle class.
“She is in serious trouble”, Sanders said speaking to reporters in Pleasantville, Iowa on Monday. Specifically, we could really use more data from Latino-heavy Nevada and African-American-heavy SC, where sparse polling has given Clinton a big lead, and perhaps from some of the March primary states that also have sizable minority populations.
Meanwhile, Sanders is doing even better in New Hampshire, which borders his home state of Vermont.
“As much as I admire Chelsea, she didn’t read the plan”, Sanders said, arguing for his Medicare-for-all program. The poll shows Sanders edging with 49 percent and Clinton at 44 percent.
Monmouth’s survey comes two days after an NBC News/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll found Sanders narrowing the gap with Clinton in Iowa.
