Ken Griffey’s Golf Swing Is Very Similar To His Baseball Swing
Ken Griffey Jr. was straightforward with his Hall of Fame cap selection: His plaque in Cooperstown will have a Seattle Mariners logo and won’t portray him with the brim toward the rear, the way he wore it so often.
Griffey began and ended his 22-year career with the Mariners but spent nine years in the major leagues with the Cincinnati Reds and part of one season with the Chicago White Sox. Griffey will be immortalized as a Seattle Mariner in the Hall of Fame, while Piazza will enter as a member of the New York Mets.
Newly elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Mike Piazza on Thursday made clear which cap would sit atop his head on his plaque in Cooperstown this July.
Even though Piazza wasn’t as strong a defensive player as Griffey, he is widely considered the greatest hitting catcher of all time.
A self-avowed student of the game, Piazza said he respected “the history of the fans in NY, their passion – all the way back to the days before all the highlight reels and the new media today, the way they celebrated the game by turning a game into event”. Now let’s do it again.’ He understood the history of the game, being 38, 39, where I was just like, I’m ready to play every day. Griffey’s Hall of Fame whirlwind came back to where it all started, when he sp…
While no Mariners player has worn No. 24 since Griffey’s retirement, several minor leaguers, including Danny Hultzen and Brian Moran in 2015, have.
It’s not that the Seattle Mariners didn’t expect Ken Griffey Jr. to be elected into the Hall of Fame; they were just waiting for it to officially happen.
In addition to the Hall of Fame weekend, Griffey will throw out the first pitch on Opening Night, April 8 against the A’s.
“Unfortunately we do have to choose one”, Piazza said.
“I sat here with my mouth on the floor”, he said.
He wasn’t elected unanimously (he should have been), but he certainly was close.
“I knew he was going to get in for sure with the career had”, longtime teammate Edgar Martinez said. Baseball-wise, yeah, you’re going to look at numbers and things like that.
However, what’s been most fascinating to observe, is how humble the 13-time All-Star has remained throughout it all.
That changed in 1990 when the then-40-year-old Ken Griffey Sr. joined his son in Seattle for the last month of the season. It was widely speculated that he would pick NY as the team to represent over Los Angeles. The club will then stage a “Ken Griffey Jr”.
Mark McGwire, who admitted using steroids, received 12 percent in his 10th and final ballot appearance.
“I knew Willie and Rickey wore 24”, Griffey admitted at the presser, “but it wasn’t a big deal with me”. Piazza was also instrumental in the Mets run to the 2000 World Series.
It’s been an exciting period of time for the Seattle Mariners and their fans, who haven’t had much to cheer about in recent years.
