Comedy? No, ‘The Martian’ is a musical, Matt Damon says
Without a runaway favorite for this year’s top Academy Award, a handful of key contenders will be looking to Sunday night’s 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards for a little traction on the road to the Oscars.
And yet the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, being the shameless star-worshippers that they are, put Ridley Scott’s space epic in the same category (Best Picture, Musical or Comedy) as “Spy”, “Trainwreck” and “The Big Short” – surely for the sole objective of ensuring “The Martian” won an award.
“The 18-year gap was me working on my singing, which brought me here tonight”.
Pioneer-era tale “The Revenant” won three awards including best drama film, beating out front-runners “Carol”, a lesbian romance, and investigative journalism drama “Spotlight”.
In his acceptance speech, Damon noted that he’s made “a lot of movies that people just didn’t go see”.
The five films are the only Globe best picture nominees in either category to also appear on the Producers Guild of America’s list of 10 best picture nominees announced this past week.
In a sentimental choice that earned a standing ovation from fellow actors at the Beverly Hilton, veteran actor Sylvester Stallone won best supporting actor in a movie for “Creed”.
Best TV drama went to the upstart “Mr. Robot”, USA Network’s critically praised hacker drama, which beat out such heavyweights as Fox’s “Empire” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones”.
Affleck wasn’t the only target during the star-studded award show.
Mozart in the Jungle won Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. This is definitely not his first nomination in fact he has been nominated a total of six times and has carried home the award once.
Singer Sam Smith told reporters that recording – let alone winning – the Best Original Song Golden Globe for “Writing’s On The Wall”, the theme song to the 007 film Spectre, was a dream come true.
Awards race dark horse “Steve Jobs” also got some love on Sunday with wins for Kate Winslet, for best supporting actress, and Aaron Sorkin, for the screenplay. Voting for Oscar nominations closed on Friday, but the campaigning won’t end until the actual ceremony on February 28.
