Richards in heated debate with Villa fans after Cup draw
Yet Villa can think themselves a mite unfortunate that they did not successfully negotiate what had always looked a tricky hurdle.
2,500 Villa fans made the trip to Adams Park hoping to ease into the fourth round, but their patience has finally run out after failing to defeat a side three divisions below them. “I know what I’m doing but sometimes it isn’t working”. Maybe they know which part of the pitch you can play football.
Garde also delivered a damning assessment of Villa’s frailties after the game by admitting there was little difference in quality between the two squads, even though Villa spent over £50 million in the summer. “Every game the opponents are running more than us”. “Not to take the pressure off me – if I didn’t want the pressure I wouldn’t have this job”, he stated.
The Villains are thus rooted to the bottom of the league table, 11 points short of safety, and they have only won two of 24 matches this term in all competitions.
There is no doubt that the Villa squad has quality and talent, but the players have yet to show any of these skills, and Wycombe’s fight and mentality will make them a tough challenge.
Richards told those fans that Rémi Garde’s beleaguered boys are “trying” and are hurting as much as the fans are.
The game was Garde’s 10th in charge without a win and he admitted: “We have to face responsibilities, not only Micah, but it was fearless he did that”.
Richards lifted the spirits with a first-half strike and, amid the celebrations, they sang “We’ve scored a goal” before taunting Wycombe fans for supporting a team actually losing to Villa.
“We were pleased we dіdn’t get a a replay from Saturday’s game”, added Mіllen, who was deputіsіng for manager Alan Pardew іn Monday’s pre-match press conference.
“Of course, when a player says “I would have liked to have worked with you but, I’m sorry, I prefer to wait and see what happens”, it is very frustrating”.
He said: “This is something I asked from them a fortnight ago, or something like that”.
Alex Lynch, the Wycombe goalkeeper, said: “You try and blank things out but we are all human and I can hear what they said during the game”.
“The FA Cup іs a massіve competіtіon and we put a full-strength team out and luckіly we got a result”.
“We can’t give Villa any encouragement”, claimed Millen.
