Bowie’s son, filmmaker Duncan Jones, confirmed the news via his personal Twitter account.
Coming just two days after his birthday, and the release of what would be his final album, Blackstar, the news of his passing seemed especially shocking.
Conan O’Brien had interviewed the legendary performer many times on his former show, Late Night, and strung some of his favorite moments together for a touching montage.
“David Bowie was one of the most important and influential songwriters and performers ever and, like so many fans around the world, we’re devastated to hear of his loss”.

A further seven albums have landed in the Top 100, while in the singles charts, nine of his tracks have achieved the feat, leading with 1977’s Heroes at 25.
Pop legend David Bowie has died following an 18-month battle with cancer.
Former Roxy Music member Brian Eno, Bowie’s long-time collaborator: “Over the last few years – with him living in NY and me in London – our connection was by e-mail”.
Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger: “David was always an inspiration to me and a true original”.
“His star will shine in the sky forever”.
For the first decade of his life, no one batted an eye at the boy from Calgary named David Bowie.
In 2005, Bowie joined Arcade Fire for a rendition of Wake Up, and again in 2013 he lent them backing vocals for their song Reflektor.
