Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Andre Berto confirmed as per TMZ
Victor – who fought (and was beat by) Mayweather in 2011 – did have one suggestion for Floyd… drop Berto and swap him in instead.
“If Floyd Mayweather really ends his career by facing Andre Berto, how terribly discouraging it would be”, wrote Forbes Magazine sports blogger Josh Katzowitz, speaking for much of boxing fandom.
He may be ecstatic, but the fans will undoubtedly feel a little underwhelmed by this fight considering it’s the follow up to what was billed as the “Fight of the Century” against Manny Pacquiao. And, if left to his own devices, he would not only fight Andre Berto next, but likely someone even less challenging. Now that he seeks to tie with Rocky Mariano’s record of 49-0, it is possible that his next fight on September will be a free-fight for the viewers. His fights with Alvarez and De La Hoya also drew millions of dollars from pay-per-view airing.
It was abundantly clear he fought Pacquiao for one thing – the ridiculous purse.
The unpredictable Mayweather is expected to formally announce the fight next week, the source said.
Khan refuses to give up hope, however, as he does not think that Mayweather will retire after his September 12 fight, despite the unbeaten boxer’s repeated assertions. On May 2 Mayweather defeated Pacquiao in a unanimous decision.
“Rarely do you have an event of this magnitude that you hear about in two or three months’ notice”, the source said.
TMZ previously reported that there was some bad blood between the two, with Berto claiming the undisputed pound-for-pound king was prank calling him, and he believes it was over a woman.
Of Mayweather’s last thirteen opponents, eight were those he had, at some point, been accused of “ducking”. He was once suspended from the sport after testing for a banned substance, but it was subsequently ruled that Berto’s positive test was the result of contamination, and he regained his boxing licence.
I can’t say I’m familiar with Berto, but 33-3 is an impressive record. “There would be a lot of disappointed people if he does that”.
