Oakland gets temporary reprieve in effort to keep Raiders
As a consolation prize, the National Football League has agreed to give both teams $100 million towards a new stadium project in their current home markets.
But NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has long warned cities that modern venues mean more than loyal ticket-buying support when it comes to providing proper support for NFL teams.
The San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders were also looking to move to Los Angeles. But the return stay has not been almost as successful as the first tenure when the Raiders won two Super Bowls and were one of the league’s top teams.
The Chargers have one year to exercise an option to join Rams owner Stan Kroenke in his $1.86 billion retractable roof stadium in Inglewood on the old Hollywood Park site as either a partner or tenant.
La Canfora said the relocation vote was a huge victory for Kroenke, who had been doing everything in his power to make sure his team would be able to leave St. Louis after the 2015 season.
After a preliminary vote favored the Rams option by a 20-12 margin, the Raiders backed out of the relocation process and will remain in Oakland. Maybe it is because of the team’s struggles while playing in STL, or the “lack of fan interest and resources available” according to Stan Kroenke, but the move to Los Angeles will be well worth the while for the Rams financially.
Problem: Davis has repeatedly said that he isn’t interested in moving his team to Levi’s, period.
Oakland has no firm plans for a new stadium, but has trumpeted the wealth of the Bay Area and the prime location of the Coliseum with its proximity to public transit and freeways as reasons to keep the Raiders in town. If a deal gets done in Oakland, he’ll be a hero to Raider nation.
“While there understandably has been emotionally charged commentary regarding our motives and intentions, the speculation is not true and unfounded”. We tried to get something done on various alternatives (in St. Louis).
First answer: The St. Louis Rams are now the L.A. Rams, will play there in 2016 and will build a new stadium in Inglewood. It’s unclear where the Chargers would play if they move. “We’re going to find a home”.
“We understand the emotions involved of our fans and it’s not easy to do these things”, Kroenke said. “San Diegans deserve better”. “I’m going to look at all of our options”. However, the team also has the option of staying in San Diego for the 2016 season and then working out an L.A. lease with the Rams after that.
“It’s kind of refreshing, but I don’t know”, said another man. “I’m still, hey money talks, and business owners, they really don’t follow what the people say; they follow their wallets”. “It’s bittersweet, too, because we were unable to get the facilities that we’d hoped for in their markets”. The last two moves were the Oilers from Houston to Tennessee in 1997 and the Browns from Cleveland to Baltimore in 1996. We’ll see what the Chargers and the Raiders do in the future, but the Los Angeles Rams are officially back.
San Diego has a $1.1 billion proposal to replace aging Qualcomm Stadium, but it will require a public vote that likely wouldn’t happen before June.
