VW says diesel fix on way
“US regulators have taken a tougher stance on this than in Europe, partly because emission regulations for diesel cars are tougher”, said Juergen Pieper, a Frankfurt-based analyst for Bankhaus Metzler.
VW said there was “no basis” for such repurchases in Germany, as the modalities to refit the affected vehicles had already been agreed.
The company first acknowledged in September that the cheating software was included in its diesel cars and SUVs sold since the 2009 model year, as well as some recent diesel models sold by the VW-owned Audi and Porsche brands.
But quickly after those formalities, he launched into a 4-minute apology, touching on various aspects of the scandal, one which arose previous year after US regulators discovered that VW used illegal software to get around emissions standards. The federal government doesn’t sound particularly confident that a solution will be reached quickly either, with the EPA’s spokesperson Cynthia Giles saying, the talks “have have not produced an acceptable way forward” yet.
Referring to a newspaper report which stated Volkswagen Group has recalled 3.24 lakh cars, the petition had sought directions to produce all relevant documents and details on the basis of which they have made a decision to recall the vehicles in India.
Volkswagen was facing the heat from the US Justice Department when it sued the German automobile maker for installing devices so that it could bypass the emission control regime of US. It was found that when tested under normal road conditions, the engines emitted nitrogen oxide which is up to 40 times of what is allowed in the U.S.
The scandal eventually globally, with Volkswagen admitting 11 million diesel passenger cars could be affected.
“I find it frustrating that, despite public statements professing cooperation and an expressed desire to resolve the various investigations that it faces following its calculated deception, Volkswagen (Other OTC: VLKAF – news) is, in fact, resisting cooperation by citing German law”, he said. The regulator declared it will insist on the idea of making VW come up with “effective appropriate remedies as expeditiously as possible at no cost to owners”.
In Europe, VW plans to start recalling this month some 8.5 million affected vehicles in the region for a re-fit or adjustment.
Herbert Diess, VW Brand Chief, told Reuters at the onsumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, that bringing older cars into compliance with emissions standards would be very hard costly.
