‘Unforgettable’: Singer Natalie Cole dies at 65
Unfortunately, her appearance in the production was canceled when the show closed on June 29.
The statement from her son Robert Yancy and twin sisters Timolin and Casey Cole said: “Natalie fought a fierce, courageous battle, dying how she lived … with dignity, strength and honour”.
The singer Natalie Cole died on New Year’s Eve in the United States, at the relatively young age of 65. While she initially didn’t intend to pursue music, she began singing and performing after college, choosing rock and R&B material over her father’s jazz standards. While she kept recording and touring – she won a ninth Grammy in 2009 for “Still Unforgettable” – illness cut into her career. Exuberant, piano-thumping, gospel-influenced pop, 1975’s “This Will Be” is her best work, and it still sounds like the musical equivalent of a sunshower (though it’s become annoyingly associated with eHarmony commercials).
Civil rights leader Jesse Jackson was among those paying tribute to Natalie Cole.
But she achieved her greatest success in 1991 by returning to some of the classics sung by her father.
“With album titles such as “Inseparable”, “Everlasting”, and “Unforgettable… with love”, and more recently “Still Unforgettable”, we shall remember her for capturing the emotions of timelessness and an appreciation for abundant love”. The hits helped Cole win the prestigious Grammy for Best New Artist.
She expressed her gratitude for their support and said, “I love you all”, her family told the Daily Mail.
From online dating to father-daughter wedding dances, her voice was the soundtrack to American romance. Natalie also revealed that she had Hepatitis C – a liver virus that she presumably contracted as a result of her past drug use. In 1983, drug addiction led Cole to spend a few months at the Hazelden Clinic in Minnesota.
In 2009, she received a kidney from an anonymous donor after hepatitis C forced her into dialysis.
Sharing a picture of the pair, Tony wrote: “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Natalie Cole, as I have cherished the long friendship with her, her father Nat and the family over the years”.
Her father was highly popular and her mother, Maria Cole, sang with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. In 1974, Ms. Cole was signed to Capitol Records, her father’s recording label.
Flowers are placed on the star of singer Natalie Cole on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on January 1, 2016 in Hollywood, California.
The awards were the first in what would be a string of Grammys for Ms. Cole over the next three decades.
