Golden Globes Viewership Down from Last Year
“I am going to do this monologue and then go into hiding”.
He labelled Sean Penn a “snitch” for his Rolling Stone interview with the Mexican drug lord known as El Chapo.
The sharp-tongued British comic – the host of the awards from 2010-2012 before being replaced by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler – appeared to relish his bad boy reputation as he took the stage at the Beverly Hilton.
Julianne Moore won past year for her portrayal of a woman living with early onset Alzheimer’s Disease in “Still Alice” and went on to win the best actress Oscar, too.
Amazon’s Mozart In The Jungle took away two awards, one for Best Series – Comedy or Musical, and another for Best Actor – Comedy or Musical, for Gael Garcia Bernal.
Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes also honours television shows. 12 Years A Slave (2013) and Argo (2012) picked up Best Picture prizes at both shows, but such correlations happen roughly 50 per cent of the time in other years.
DiCaprio took home his third Golden Globes in his eleventh nomination, brushing aside competition in the best actor category from Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) and Will Smith (Concussion).
Like every year the winners at the Golden Globes gave an inkling of what we can expect when the Academy Awards are given out on February 28. It was Hamm’s sixth nomination and second win. Jennifer Lawrence, victor for best actress-comedy for her film Joy, was also snapped talking with ex-boyfriend Nicholas Hoult.
It was also nice to see Brie Larson win for “Room”. The newcomer won over the likes of front-runner Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara, Saorse Ronan and Alicia Vikander. It beat out heavyweight shows like HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, and Fox’s “Empire”.
Leonardo DiCaprio poses with his Golden Globe best actor trophy, which he won for (right) his role in “The Revenant”. “The Martian” did win best comedy film and best actor in a comedy for star Matt Damon. “Revenant” star Leonardo DiCaprio won best drama actor.
This year’s award that honors people who have had an enormous impact on the entertainment world, the Cecile B. DeMille Award, will go to Denzel Washington.
Unfortunately, that audience laughter didn’t translate into high ratings for the four-time Golden Globes host. Not many singers have been able to cross over and win major acting awards. Oscar nominees will be announced on January 15.
The bottom line is that the Golden Globes are not that good an indicator of anything other than Hollywood’s ability to enjoy itself, through free alcohol, rubbing shoulders with other A-listers and swag.
