In January 2012, the Mexican film and television star Kate del Castillo began a correspondence with El Chapo and the two developed a mutual trust of one another.
The messages provide a new window into the mysterious relationship between the then-fugitive and Del Castillo, who brokered the sitdown between Guzman and Penn, which authorities are investigating.
Guzman was re-arrested on Friday after six months on the run, and Mexican officials subsequently revealed his meeting with Penn and Del Castillo had helped authorities track him down.

Del Castillo sparked uproar in 2012 when she wrote on Twitter that she believes “more in Chapo Guzman than the governments”. “I’m very excited about our story….It’s all I think about”, she wrote on October 10. Stores in Mexico City on Wednesday sold piñatas resembling the pair, with “del Castillo” brandishing a pistol with “I love Chapo” written across it. She is a famous soap opera actress in Mexico who once played the head of a drug cartel.
In an article accompanying the photos, El Universal said Mexican agents were aware of and following del Castillo’s contacts with Guzman’s lawyers since at least June.
