Coughlin bids farewell to Giants organization
Former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi, who hired Coughlin in 2004: “Tom Coughlin is a great coach and an even better man. He has left his mark on this great franchise, and his legacy of excellence is secure”.
“We haven’t really had that discussion”, Mara said of trading draft picks for a head coach.
The Giants have just two wins since October and capped their season with a 35-30 loss to Philadelphia. Outside of those two Super Bowl runs, the Giants only made the playoffs three times during Coughlin’s 12 years and lost the first game each time.
Manning told reporters as the Giants cleaned out their lockers that “we as players failed” Coughlin, who is the only head coach Manning has known in his National Football League career.
The Inquisitr reported the likeliness of Tom Coughlin’s removal last night, and many had already expected the move mid-way through the season as the Giants struggled to come a top a mediocre NFC East where other teams were plagued with injury and personnel issues.
The Browns and Niners wielded the ax on Sunday, while the Eagles, Dolphins and Titans finished the season with interim coaches who are longshots to remain at the helm.
Interim Coach Mike Mularkey, who replaced the fired Ken Whisenhunt during the season, is a candidate for the position of permanent coach, the team said Monday in a news release. The coach had spoken to the team earlier in the morning and many were saddened by the thought he might not be back. “Tom’s had a great career as a head coach and as an assistant coach: BC, Jacksonville, New York”.
Coughlin’s final record as Giants head coach is 110-92, including playoff games.
Over the course of his 12 years with the Giants, he brought stability to the team.
According to a source familiar with the coach’s thinking, he is not yet ready to retire from football despite the grueling toll that the losing had on him.
“I think our offense certainly improved, ” said Mara, who indicated that continuity on that side of the ball was part of the equation.
The New York Giants are sticking with general manager Jerry Reese.
“He’s been a great coach to play for”, Manning said, at times tearing up.
“We would certainly make recommendations to [the hire]”, Mara said. “He just has to be somebody we’re comfortable with and someone we can win with”. Remember, when we lose, I lose. The guy won two Super Bowls in NY and the failures the team as had weren’t completely his fault.
