Not-Canadian Ted Cruz Forced to Defend His Eligibility to Be President
Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump is once again raising the question of what constitutes a natural born citizen, challenging whether fellow Republican Ted Cruz qualifies to be president.
As for what Ted Cruz has to say about this, he preferred a more diplomatic approach, refusing to engage with Donald Trumps and his attacks.
Cruz’s red meat approach was unusual among Republican candidates in a state that tends to favor more moderate-leaning Republicans.
“The child of a US citizen born overseas is a natural-born citizen”, Cruz said.
“You’re not”, the billionaire said, addressing the issue of whether Cruz was a natural-born citizen at a rally in Iowa on Saturday night. Cruz’s campaign believes that virtually all constitutional scholars, except Tribe, say he is eligible for the presidency since he was born to a mother who is an American citizen. “I don’t want to beat him in this way”, he said. I would imagine the case would be thrown out. “But a lot of people are talking about it, and I know that even some states are looking at it very strongly, the fact that he was born in Canada and he has had a double passport”. “He was born in Canada”, Trump said over the weekend. “I’m only saying that Ted has to get this problem solved because if he’s running against a Democrat, and they bring a lawsuit, he’s got a hell of a thing over his head”. “Nobody can compete with me on illegal immigration”, he said.
In New Hampshire, Trump is the clear leader with 32 percent support among likely Republican voters, a new Monmouth University poll shows. He said the Supreme Court may have to settle the issue if Democrats sue.
Cruz, who over the past few weeks has specifically endorsed deportations after months of resisting, said in an interview that aired Sunday on “State of the Union” that the US should catch those who came here illegally under normal law enforcement practices, not through round-ups of the estimated 11 million undocumented people living in the U.S.
Conservative talk radio host Mark Levin became irritated with Trump’s attacks against Cruz last week over the issue, saying that the New York Republican needs to lay off of Cruz.
Cruz has refused to engage with Trump on the issue.
The courts would probably side with Cruz, since historical records indicate that the phrase “natural born” was meant to apply to anyone who did not go through a naturalization process.
“Not many evangelicals come out of Cuba”, Trump recently quipped.
“Listen, any time somebody’s attacking your faith, it starts to suggest they’re getting really nervous about what’s happening in the race”, Cruz said.
The percentage of voters who say they are locked into their choice has grown from 20 percent in November to 32 percent in the latest survey.
