Star Wars Beats Revenant and DiCaprio to Remain No. 1
At the very least, he probably wasn’t driving around with that giant sticker in 2015, or angry Star Wars fans would have turned that truck into scrap. “The Danish Girl”, $3.2 million. 19.
Star Wars posted a strong Saturday to claim 1st place for the fourth straight weekend. The film had been in limited release to ensure it can compete for an Oscar, giving it a total three-week take so far of $41.4 million. Despite the challenges, the film exceeded projections, which had it opening to around 20 million.
Chinese cinemas dedicated half their screens to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” when it debuted on Saturday, according to the Walt Disney Company China. That brought the film’s total earnings to $1.73 billion. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Avatar’s all-time worldwide record of $2.788 million certainly isn’t out of range either.
The Revenant has come the closest to knocking Star Wars out of the top spot for the weekend.
According to weekend studio estimates, Star Wars took $41.6m (£28.5m) in the USA and Canada. Alejandro G. Inarritu’s “The Revenant” staring Leonardo DiCaprio overperforms.
Analysts correctly predicted Star Wars would be able to edge out The Revenant for first place.
And finally, “Daddy’s Home” brought in an estimated $15 million, showing goofy comedies can have staying power, too. The movie opens in USA theaters on January 8, 2016. The R-rated comedy is now up to $74.9 million domestically and $83.1 million worldwide, making it nicely ahead of their 2008 team-up Baby Moma ($60.5 million) already.
Debuting at #4 was the low budget thriller “The Forest”, which mirrors prior January fright-fests “The Lady In Black 2′ and “Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones”.
Other top opening-day grosses in China include Avengers: Age of Ultron ($29.2 million), Transformers: Age of Extinction ($27.4 million) and Terminator: Genisys ($26.7 million). The film should end its domestic run with $85 million to $90 million.
Taking a huge hit was “The Hateful Eight” which fell out of the top five altogether. It earned $13.1 million in 2,451 theaters, which was a little more than expected, but it only earned a C on Cinemascore.
