Israel’s Shimon Peres rushed to hospital with chest pains
Former Israeli President Shimon Peres was rushed to the Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer after complaining of chest pains, Thursday morning.
“He underwent a cardiac catheterisation during which a narrowed artery was diagnosed which was then widened during the procedure”.
Frisch says Peres is conscious and was communicating.
Polish-born Peres is credited with setting up Israel’s nuclear capabilities, and won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in the 1993 interim peace deal with the Palestinians. The prize earned him his stature overseas as a revered statesman.
Despite his age, Peres has maintained an active public schedule, mostly through his non-governmental Peres Centre for Peace, which promotes closer ties between Israel and the Palestinians. He served as prime minister twice, from 1984 to 1986 as part of a rotational government, and in 1995 after the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin. Mr Walden said Mr Peres is expected to stay in hospital for “a few days”, adding: “We expect that within a short time he will return to normal”.
